Should we devote ourselves entirely to God? Yes, but what does that mean? If I neglect my family in the name of devoting myself to God, have I truly devoted myself to Him?
The scribes and Pharisees believed that one could give all his money to God, and if none was leftover for needy dad and mom, that was okay. However, Jesus told the scribes and Pharisees that by such thinking they made the commandment of God of no effect by their tradition:
But you say, “Whoever says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God’—then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.”
– Matthew 15.5–6
Yes, give yourself entirely to God, but you do that by honoring all that he says, which includes taking care of our families.
Questions:
- Do you treat your family well?
- How do you honor your family?
