Why the location of the altar of incense mattered

Old Testament: Exo 30.6

To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 29–30 on February 2, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

As the Lord told Moses how he wanted the tabernacle arranged, and after explaining how to make the Altar of Incense, the Lord said this:

“And you shall put it before the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you.”

– Exodus 30.6

They put the Altar of Incense in the first room, the Holy Place, but the Lord wanted it placed right in front of the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies, and he specified that it would be right in the middle of the curtain so that it was before the Ark of the Testimony and the Mercy Seat.

When the priest put incense on the altar and with the curtain open, the aroma would fill both rooms, and Psalm 141.2 and Revelation 8.5 state that incense represents our prayers.

How appropriate then that the Altar of Incense was put in that location.

Questions:

  • Have you thought before that your prayers are like incense before God?
  • Why would our prayers be like incense to him?
