Jesus and Jerusalem

New Testament: Matt 23.37

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 23.23–39 on February 5, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

Jesus loved the city of Jerusalem. That was the place that he chose for the children of Israel to worship him. Yet, the city often rebelled:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!”

– Matthew 23.37

You can tell by his words, that he was the One responsible for sending the prophets that we read about in the Old Testament, because Jesus is the Lord of the Old Testament. What you see of the Lord’s treatment of Jerusalem in the Old Testament, is how Jesus treated the city.

Questions:

  • What did he want to do with Jerusalem according to the passage above?
  • What did Jerusalem do to the prophets?
