What God will do when we love him

Old Testament: Deu 30.7–8

To read the Bible in a year, read Deuteronomy 29–30 on March 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

After Moses taught Israel, when they returned to the Lord, that the Lord their God would circumcise their hearts that they might love him, he then said:

“Also the LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. And you will again obey the voice of the LORD and do all His commandments which I command you today.”

– Deuteronomy 30.7–8

If they loved him, he would deal with their enemies, but he also stressed that they had to obey the voice of the Lord.

Let us learn from the Lord’s dealings with Israel that we should also love the Lord and show that love by doing what he says to do, then he will take vengeance on our enemies, as Paul taught in Romans 12.19, quoting the Old Testament, by the way: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12.19).

Questions:

  • What commands do you struggle to keep?
  • Have you seen the Lord take down your enemies?
