How long has it been since Abijam died?

Old Testament: 1Ki 15.7–8

To read the Bible in a year, read First Kings 14–15 on May 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

Abijam reigned three years over Judah, but he did not follow the example of David. Abijam did not have a loyal heart toward the Lord his God. Eventually, he died as we all do:

Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam. So Abijam rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David. Then Asa his son reigned in his place.

– 1 Kings 15.7–8

He had three years to show his loyalty to God, but he died not having shown it. Since he passed away, he has been in torment. How long has he been in that condition? How much longer shall he be in it?

What do you think he believes now? Surely, he wishes that he had used his few years on earth to do the will of God, but now he has to pay for his neglect for the rest of eternity. It was not worth it.

Questions:

  • Are you making the most of your time on earth to show God your loyalty?
  • Where did they bury Abijam?
