How the Lord provides for us

Old Testament: 1Ki 17.8–9

To read the Bible in a year, read First Kings 16–18 on May 8, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

The Lord provides what we need in this life, but we do not necessarily see him doing it because he uses agents, whether those agents realize that God is using them or not, as in the case of the widow who helped Elijah:

Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

– 1 Kings 17.8–9

When Elijah arrived at her home, the narration makes it obvious that she had no idea she would provide for Elijah, because she did not even know how she would provide for herself during the severe drought then going on.

However, Elijah instructed her on what to do, and she did it, which led to have the resources to provide for him and for her.

The Lord has promised to provide for us. You may not see how it can happen, but he will do it. Just wait on the Lord and watch him work.

Questions:

  • Where was Sidon?
  • Have you seen later how the Lord provided for you, although you could not see it at the time?
