Inquire of the Lord

Old Testament: 2Sa 2.1–3

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Samuel 1–3 on April 21, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

If you know the life of David as revealed in the Scriptures, you will not be surprised to read the following:

It happened after this that David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.” So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. And David brought up the men who were with him, every man with his household. So they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

– 2 Samuel 2.1–3

It did not surprise me to read of David inquiring whether he should go up to one of the cities of Judah, and once he received an answer that he should go up, he still did not operate on his own will, but wanted the Lord to reveal which city!

Questions:

  • Who was David’s first wife before the two listed in the passage above?
  • How often do you consult the Lord?
