Israel followed the cloud

Old Testament: Num 9.17–23

To read the Bible in a year, read Numbers 8–10 on February 23, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

During the wilderness wanderings, Israel journeyed east of Egypt and south of the Land of Canaan, but they did not live in one place that entire time. Instead, they moved about, staying at various places for different amounts of time.

They knew when to leave a camp and when to move to a new one by the movement of the pillar of a cloud that was over the tabernacle (it was a pillar of fire during the night):

Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, after that the children of Israel would journey; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would pitch their tents. At the command of the LORD the children of Israel would journey, and at the command of the LORD they would camp; as long as the cloud stayed above the tabernacle they remained encamped…

– Numbers 9.17–23

We know well the times that Israel rebelled against the Lord during their wilderness journeys, but there were plenty of times when they did obey the Lord, such as when to move, and when and where to camp.

Let us take direction from the Lord in his word on how to live also. We sin, but let it be said that the majority of the time, we follow the Lord.

Questions:

  • How tall do you think the pillar of cloud was?
  • Do you seek the Lord’s guidance daily?
