The Jews pressured Pilate to crucify Jesus, and he went against his own conscience to appease them by turning Jesus over to crucifixion. Their contention against Him was that they believed He claimed to be the King of the Jews. So watch what happened between them and Pilate when he put the accusation against Jesus on the cross that all might know why He was crucified: 

Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

– John 19.21–22 

Finally, Pilate stood up to them and stated that his decision was final, but unfortunately he did not have that fortitude earlier and rescue Jesus from the Jews.
