The Lord wanted 12 apostles, and the apostles knew it. Therefore, when Judas Iscariot forsook them and took his own life, they needed to replace him. Peter stood up and stated the qualifications for a new apostle: 

“Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

– Acts 1.21–22 

When you read the Gospel Accounts, and you see Jesus with the original 12, and there are others present, you need to realize that there were at least two men who were always in the picture, although none of the writers mention either man. 

Questions: 

• Who were the two men that they put forward? 
• Of what did the apostles have to be a witness?
