We are the offspring of God

New Testament: Acts 17.29

To read the Bible in a year, read Acts 17.16–34 on July 13, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Should we imagine God like us or us like God? Idolatry is all about creating a god in the image of the idol maker, but the truth is, we are made in the image of the one, true and living God. As Paul told the Athenian philosophers:

“Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.”

– Acts 17:29

We are not gold, silver, or stone. Why then should we think that God is? We have been made in his image and he is spirit. Therefore, we are spirit, temporarily housed in flesh. This is why idolatry is foolish, because it tries to make a god like a man.

Questions:

  • Have you ever worshiped an idol?
  • If man shapes an image and devises a god, is not the man the god?
