The Thessalonians had made a huge turn around when they left idolatry and turned to Christ, although it meant affliction for them: 

And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.

– 1 Thessalonians 1.6–7 

They followed the preachers Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy and that caused them to follow the Lord. By receiving the word during persecution and having joy at the same time, they became examples to others of what to do.
