The New Covenant would not be like the Old Covenant

Old Testament: Jer 31.31–32

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 31–32 on November 1, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The new covenant would not be like the old covenant, for if it was, why have a new covenant? Jeremiah the prophet said:

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.”

– Jeremiah 31.31–32

While the Hebrew Scriptures taught not to add to nor to take away from the word of God (Deuteronomy 4.2; Proverbs 30.6), the Scriptures also foresaw a time when the Lord would provide a new covenant.

It would be different in that you would have to know the Lord first, then be born into a covenant relationship with the Lord, whereas, under the old covenant one was born into a covenant relationship with the Lord and had to be told about the Lord.
