Often people will say that the Old Testament was only about Israel, but that is not true as the following shows: 

The word that the LORD spoke against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.

– Jeremiah 50.1 

God did not begin loving the world when Jesus said that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, but God has loved the world from the beginning. After all, Adam and Eve were not children of Israel. Therefore, whenever a people, like the Babylonians, persisted in their sin, God had to deal with them according to His righteousness.
