As Babylon devoured, so they would be devoured

Old Testament: Jer 51.34–40

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 51–52 on November 9, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Babylon became rich and powerful, not only because of its own building up of itself, but through devouring other nations, such as Judah. Therefore, the people of God said to God:

“Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon
Has devoured me, he has crushed me;
He has made me an empty vessel…
Let the violence done to me and my flesh be upon Babylon,”
The inhabitant of Zion will say;
“And my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea!”
Jerusalem will say.

Therefore thus says the LORD:

“Behold, I will plead your case and take vengeance for you.
I will dry up her sea and make her springs dry.
Babylon shall become a heap…”

– Jeremiah 51.34–40

The Jews would ask the Lord to make sure that Babylon reaped as they had sown, and the Lord promised that is what He would do with them. History and archaeology show that is exactly what happened.

Questions:

  • Have the nations of the world learned from Babylon’s example?
  • Have you learned from Babylon’s example?
