Ishmael mocked Isaac, so Sarah wanted Abraham to drive Hagar and Ishmael away so that Ishmael might not inherit along with Isaac.
That must have been a hard thing for Abraham to do, but he knew that God would be with her and her son. Truly, the Bible says:
And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
– Genesis 21.17–18
She would never have to worry again, for the God of heaven and of earth was watching over her and her son. Since Ishmael was a son of Abraham, God would not only let the boy live, but God would make him into a great nation.
- Do you worry?
- Has not God always taken care of you?
